Apples orchards in the region of Los Ríos show special adaptations highlighting for their geo-resistance and high nutritional levels. Soils where it grows fed from the nutrients brought by the ring of fire, a higher reception of light and sun radiation as a result of the low geomagnetic field intensity of the land. Therefore, crops generate more returns and counter-season harvests are obtained. In addition, apples have acquired acidity, sweetness and nuance making them unique around the world.
Besides, the geographical location allows that cultivations isolate naturally from some common plagues in the rest of the continent, turning this zone into a phytosanitary reserve.
Current production in the region
Apple cultivations in the Region of Los Ríos have experienced a sustained increase in the last years. This is mostly due to the lemon apple cultivation and other species that for their special acidity are used for the elaboration of cider. According to fruit crop records of Los Ríos, from the 2,703 hectares destined the cultivation of fruit trees, only 8.3 hectares are used in the apple cultivation. From these, 77% are destined to varieties of green apples, and the rest to red varieties.
This refreshing drink that is made from the apple juice fermentation is deeply rooted in the region. Recently, its flavor has conquered local and international markets since among its qualities - its low alcoholic strength, generally, between 2° and 14°, low calories, and nutritive properties inhered from the apples used to prepare it are noticeable.
The cider elaborated in the region has also high contents of antioxidants and vitamins assigning it diuretic, digestion and metabolism stimulating properties.
“Punucapa” is one of the brands with origin denomination and leader in the region. Others, such as Lagar de Lobos, is highlighted for adding berry flavors - other typical fruit of the region - to its ciders.
Apples as superfood
The apple cultivated in the region has high contents of antioxidants, dietary fiber and vitamins providing it commercial attractive at a dietary, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical level.
The high presence of polyphenols and flavonoids are responsible for giving it its antioxidant capacities, a characteristic which in nutrition provide positive effects with respect to anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer properties and in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases or development of heart afflictions (Audimark; Fundación Chile, 2014).
In addition to antioxidants, these apples have vitamin A, various from B complex, vitamin C, D, E and K plus other basic elements in the development and functioning of the human body, such as iron, calcium, zinc, phosphorous, potassium, vegetable fats and sugars.
